How It All Began…
First Post!
I have to admit our decision to "downsize" and become more self sufficient was partly influenced by UK TV personality Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall and his television series "River Cottage". We started watching the series mid 2005 and combined with the factor of location at the time and where we just moved from, relocated to a rural property in New Mexico from New York City, the thought having a healthier life style and being less reliant on the commercial world really started to appeal.
The start is slow, neither one of us have any real experience growing things and finding alternatives to store bought products sometimes requires scouring the internet for ideas. Our first trial at growing vegetables was this year while we were still living in an apartment in Boulder, suffice to say it was a near failure, though some of the plants are still holding in, well into Fall! I'm keeping my hopes up for a few of them. But now the process has stepped up a notch, we've bought a small property in the Rockies of Colorado, hence the websites name, and we're gearing up or the real learning experience.
