The Long Awaited Update
Wow it's been over 6 months without an update. The self sufficiency experiment was briefly put on hold at the end of winter due to some international travel to the warm sunny beaches of SE Asia and Australia for few months. And all my efforts over the long (and VERY cold) winter were put into other projects.
Things started to get back on track in May, 3 new raised beds were dug over the spring summer, the chickens who have been away staying in NM for 6 months are finally back home and the garden that was planted over may and June is growing prolific. Now we just hope that the growing season will hold out for our 12 or so tomato plants to ripen. Here's a brief summery of what we've down growing:
- Potatoes, nearly a whole beds worth.
- Kale
- Brussels
- Cabbage
- A few straggly onions
- Same for the garlic
- Greens of many different varieties galore, should keep us going for a few months.
- Swiss chard
- Beets
- A few different peas and beans
- Chillis
- Tomatos, these too are doing well in the green house.
- Tons of herb, about 30 plants of cilantro alone!
- and a few other variuos bits and bobs.
On the fruit side we've put in 2 cheery trees and 2 apple, 2 rhubarb plats, 3 raspberries, 1 Gooseberry and a bunch of strawberries to go with the wild ones that are growing here. The hopes for the fruit trees is that they'll produce while left unattended if we have to start traveling again.
So there it is… I'm going to make a conscious effort to update this blog a lot more in the future, might put up a few recipes for the wines I've been making over the last 6 months too.
